School Workshop Series

Workshop details

Jangu (장구) is a traditional Korean hourglass-shaped drum, valued for its versatility and the wide range of musical roles it can take within Korean drumming traditions. In Samulnori, learning often begins with the Jangu as it introduces the core rhythmic patterns that form the basis of the other instruments and much of the repertoire.

This workshop series is open to students of all musical levels, with instruments provided. Sessions are flexible and can be tailored to suit school timetables, including term-based programs with varying frequency per week. Students will learn excerpts from Samdo Seoljangu, a seated jangu performance piece designed for group learning. This work can cater to mixed-ability ensembles, allowing students at different levels to participate together while developing rhythmic precision, coordination, and ensemble skills. It also works as a performance piece that highlights technical skill and traditional musical expression and the rhythms are transferable to other traditional works. This program can also lead to a performance opportunity if the school schedule allows.
